Who You Are:

The Benefits team develops and manages a large and complex program to meet the needs of our diverse and rapidly growing worksite employee population, which exceeds 25,000 and is continuing to grow. As Underwriting Analyst, you will report to the Senior Manager, Underwriting and support the New Business Underwriting team in maintaining pricing accuracy, monitoring deal-level and portfolio-level performance, and testing rating and system changes as our underwriting model evolves.

This role sits at the intersection of underwriting and data. You will work daily inside PRISM, Salesforce, and the team's real-time reporting tools, reviewing rating outputs, tracking exception and concession volume, and flagging discrepancies before they become client-facing problems. This is an ideal next step for someone already inside ExtensisHR who knows our PRISM and Salesforce environment and wants to move into underwriting, or for a finance or operations professional with a strong interest in benefits and financial data. Deep underwriting background is not required on day one – familiarity with how our systems and data actually work matters more, and underwriting judgment will be built on the job under the Senior Manager's direction

What You'll Do:

  • Support the Senior Manager, Underwriting in day-to-day case review – checking rating outputs, retier requests, and plan setups for accuracy against underwriting guidelines and carrier rules.
  • Monitor the team's real-time KPI dashboards – concession volume, pipeline activation, retier approval rates, and exception trends – and flag items that need senior attention.
  • Test rating and pricing updates in PRISM and Salesforce as the team rolls out new business rules, rate books, and formula changes, confirming outputs match expected results before go-live.
  • Assist with parity and QA review of underwriting decisions submitted by our outsourced underwriting vendor (OIP), identifying discrepancies and escalating unresolved issues.
  • Maintain and update underwriting reference materials and SOP documentation as processes evolve.
  • Partner with the Senior Manager, Underwriting on the ongoing build of underwriting analytics tools, including the UW Workbench and related reporting, providing subject-matter input from a day-to-day case perspective.
  • Provide regular reporting and analysis on new business underwriting activity, including trend tracking and ad hoc requests from Benefits Management leadership.
  • Support medical plan setup and configuration work across carriers (Aetna, Anthem, Kaiser) as new business and renewal cycles require.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department and the organization.

AI Utilization and Literacy:

  • A key function of this role includes the effective use and understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technologies to enhance productivity, decision-making, and overall performance. This position is expected to maintain awareness of emerging AI applications relevant to their responsibilities, apply AI tools ethically and effectively, and continuously develop their AI proficiency.

What You Bring:

  • Existing familiarity with ExtensisHR's PRISM and/or Salesforce environment is a significant advantage – internal candidates from finance, operations, or benefits who already navigate these systems are strongly encouraged to apply, even without direct underwriting experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience in underwriting, benefits administration, financial analysis, or operations. Group health, PEO, or carrier experience is a plus but not required for the right internal fit.
  • Interest in or working knowledge of group health insurance plan designs and medical plan setup – or a demonstrated ability to learn how a plan is built quickly.
  • Comfort working with data: you can navigate a dashboard, spot an outlier, and know when a number doesn't look right. Strong Excel skills are required.
  • Excellent attention to detail – this role exists to catch what would otherwise slip through.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain a discrepancy or a recommendation clearly to both underwriting and non-underwriting audiences.
  • A genuine interest in how underwriting decisions get made, with the aptitude to grow into more independent case review and analytics work over time. This role is designed as a growth path, not a finished skill set on arrival.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent experience in benefits, underwriting, financial operations, or a related field.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while performing desk-related tasks.
  • Prolonged use of a computer, keyboard, and mouse, requiring repetitive motion.
  • Ability to lift and carry office supplies or equipment up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, and twisting to retrieve files or supplies.
  • Ability to walk throughout the office, including moving between different departments or meeting rooms.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and via phone or video conferencing.
  • Ability to focus and maintain attention for long periods while working on various tasks.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • The work environment is typically quiet and climate-controlled, with standard office equipment available.
  • This role may be performed in a hybrid or remote setting, depending on business needs and employee accommodation.
