Who You Are:

The Manager of Compliance is responsible for ensuring that the organization, as a Professional Employer Organization (PEO), operates in full compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. This role is critical in mitigating legal, financial, and reputational risks by developing, implementing, and overseeing robust compliance programs that align with industry standards and regulatory requirements. The Manager of Compliance will serve as a key liaison and advisor to internal teams and senior management, driving a culture of compliance and operational excellence across the organization.  This role coordinates all internal and client-facing compliance activities jointly with subject matter experts within this organization and with outside experts.

As Manager of Compliance, this role plays a pivotal role in shaping the compliance landscape of a leading PEO, ensuring our clients and employees are protected and our business thrives in a highly regulated environment. What You'll Do:

  • Compliance Program Management: Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive compliance policies, procedures, and initiatives tailored to PEO operations, ensuring alignment with relevant laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Regulatory Monitoring: Continuously monitor and interpret changes in federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting PEOs, including labor, tax, workers’ compensation, and unemployment insurance requirements. Communicate updates and implement necessary changes across the organization.
  • Risk Assessment & Mitigation: Conduct regular risk assessments to identify compliance vulnerabilities within PEO operations. Develop and execute strategies to mitigate identified risks and prevent potential violations.
  • Audits & Investigations: Coordinate and manage regulatory audits, investigations, and inquiries. Ensure timely and accurate responses and documentation for all compliance-related activities.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Legal, Payroll, Payroll Tax, HR, Employee Benefits, and Operations teams to ensure consistent compliance with all regulatory requirements across all PEO activities. Lead a joint cross-functional committee to ensure emerging compliance topics are being addressed, specific to the PEO and to its clients and their employees.
  • Compliance Reporting: Maintain detailed records of licenses, filings, and compliance activities. Provide regular reports to senior management and relevant stakeholders on compliance status and emerging risks.
  • Training & Education: Design and deliver compliance training programs for employees and management, ensuring awareness and understanding of legal and regulatory obligations.
  • Process Improvement: Continuously review and enhance compliance processes and workflows to streamline operations, reduce risk, and ensure efficiency.
  • Incident Management: Investigate and resolve compliance issues, recommend corrective actions, and monitor their implementation to prevent recurrence.
  • Insurance Coordination and Management: Work with the Chief Group Risk Officer, Legal, and Insurance teams within the organization to determine appropriate program coverages, policy limits, and terms. Coordinate with the organization’s insurance brokers to benchmark, negotiate, and bind coverages as agreed.

What You Bring:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Law, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Risk Management, or related field. An advanced degree or relevant certification (e.g., Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional) is a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in PEO compliance, legal, or regulatory affairs, with a strong focus on U.S. state and federal regulations.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of PEO regulations and licensing, labor laws, tax regulations, workers’ compensation, and unemployment insurance requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Skills: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to interpret complex regulations and translate them into actionable policies and procedures. Excellent organizational and project management abilities. Ability to stay current with the changing employment industry and employment laws. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret regulations, legal documents, insurance contracts, and other compliance-oriented documents.
  • Personal Attributes: Detail-oriented, ethical, and proactive. Ability to work collaboratively across departments and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
